Iam the executive Director of Safisha Africa Welfare foundation based in kenya and regestered as a non-profit organization.SAWF is an Ngo that deals with education.Safisha is a Kiswahili word meaning clean. To fulfil the millenium development goal every child has to be in school, but it is unforfunate that several children loiter around in estates without accessing education.Sawf's main objective is to improve the education of the needy in the community. The specific objectives are to sponsor the poor to access education,to give grants to schools,to establish schools and education centres ,provide education materials to schools and to campaign for education.Safisha has started working on the enrollment of children to schools and so far has established safisha academy and enrolled 65 children from poor community.Parents/guardians facing economic constrains are unable to pay fees, buy materials for their children.Sawf enrolls children the way they come and gives them free education.

Hi Alice! Thanx for your mission in serving the less fortunate in the society. My name is Charles Chitsunyu Chimega , the principal of petanguo secondary school in Ganze location,Ganze division,Ganze district in Kilifi county ,Coast province Kenya. The school is faced with all those challenges as you address in your organization. This is a new school that was started as a community initiative due to the high demand of secondary education in this Arid and Semi a rid Lands region where poverty levels are so high. The communities around here depend mostly on the GOK relief food which in most cases is not adequate and reliable enough for everybody's consumption. In this school we have very big challenge from classrooms to equipments. The school has form three now and we have only two classrooms which are occupied by form threes and form twos, the rest( form ones) learn under a cashewnut tree and worse enough when it rains then they have to occupy the corridors of the two classrooms,a situation which is not conducive as a learning environment. The school has three GOK teachers and one PTA.We really need some assistance from well wishers.
Our contacts as follows: email address petanguosecondary@rocketmail.com
cellphone +254 722936279.
We will appreciate any assistance from any well-wisher.We have developed a proposal which we shall post to you for reference.

Am Dapson Chansa, from Zambia, Lusaka. My passion goes out to education and am into this to try and educate our communities and the world! Africa continues to suffer from this area due to huge numbers of unlettered and uneducated folk. This has transcended into accepting mediocre leader, increased poverty and squalid living environment. This again has since rise in poor governance, bad leadership. The more educated folk African have the more demand for nothing less than a quality and improved living standards and the more emancipation and freedoms for its population. All manner of education and enlightenment must be a MUST for Africa!

RUBRO is basically the abbreviation of RURAL URBAN BASIC REQUIREMENTS ORGANIZATION. Theme behind the establishment of this organization is to identify the basic requirements of the people of district Dera Ismail Khan, which is one of the most backward as well as populated district of Pakistan. At the same time, Dera Ismail Khan has the soil which is matchless in its agricultural capabilities, and, at the same time, it has the people who are not less than any other as far as their mantle or intellectual capabilities are concerned. To study the main deprivations of these people, RUBRO conducted a brief survey to evaluate basic needs of these people. And the outcome of the survey was, that EDUCATION was the main point which this wise population is lacking of. secondly, HEALTH sector was not even into the picture, specially in the peripheries of Dera Ismail Khan District. Thirdly, sense of SANITATION is also one of the major issue over there. in this regard, concept of having Toilets in the house is quite a new thing to these people of 21st century. To address these main issues, RUBRO taken few positive steps. first of all, it arranged some sports festivals on different places to engage the YOUTH of the area to participate in the future, in the activities RUBRO was planning for them. secondly, RUBRO arranged places/buildings to start at least basic education which can give some food for thought to the people of these areas to attract to EDUCATED WISDOM, they are lacking of. Our team, with help of local volunteers, working day and night to provoke parents as well children to help themselves by supporting RUBRO to get what they deserve. we need support from the world to get succeeded what we are dreaming about. rubro192@hotmail.com

Our objective is assist children in the poor neighbourhood access education especially as both public and private schools are several several Kilometres away.
It is a difficult task as it requires a lot resources, but I and my wife have agreed to start small, we have managed to built 3 class rooms and currently have 25 No. who joined the school 2 months. We are hoping for the population to increase next term .
We are facing several challenges, ranging from capital, facilities, administrative among others.

When I got to know about, I was touched deeply. In Uganda, we have universal primary / secondary education. When UPE was initiated, it was embraced by many parents / guardians that either could not afford education for their children or were sincerely struggling. The problem right now is that some of the children benefiting (even others in rural / semi-urban private schools) have got difficulties accessing school materials such as books, pencils, pens etc, not to mention a failing to afford a meal a day, they go hungry all day at school. In fact in some schools, pupils without books get punished. As a result, many drop out of school.

Hi Eva,
The truth of the matter must touch everybody not only you! The new paradigms of development (policy reforms) have proved as a curse for the empowerment of marginalised rural communities. While many resource poor parents/ guardians so it a big push to introduce UPE/ USE, still many children still find it very difficult to impossible to access quality education. Leave alone the lack of school supplies, lack of a meal, .... etc, the increasing "children's right offer" make many even fail to comply to set rules/ regulations in schools. How can a child lack without being punished in a bid to mentor? The rate of dropout since the inception of the UPE program is very high, and a sure threat to the achievement of MDGs

Hi Eva,
I share your concern! I look at free education in Uganda as a failed form of public-private partnership. The needs to redefine the role of parents in educating their children. The expectations were not managed properly at the beginning.
The opportunity though is that there is still room in Uganda to prove working public-private partnerships in improving access to quality and affordable education.....And the change begins with me and you!

Hello All.
I am the chair of HESA (Health & Education for Southern Africa), a UK registered charity just starting to get up on its feet following a period of inactivity due to lack of human and other resouces. I have just recently discovered the Steve Sinnot Foundation only to see that there is a very large community with a great passion for Africa South of the Sahara, just as Steve had.
I am a Zimbabwean born British citizen who came into the UK in my adulthood in the mid 90s. My passion is to see children and young people rise to their full potential despite their background and family circumstances.
My dream is to set up a distance education facility where children are taught by experts in all subjects, who may be resident anywhere in the world. By the end of 2010, I wish to have established a video conferencing connection between, Nottingham and Johannesburg to test the feasibility of the project.
I am looking for funding to get internet via satellite as broadband is currently unreliable. I already have a commitment from a Video conferencing specialist company who has offered to donate hardware if we can guarantee connectivity.
I look forward to discussing this project further with as many as are willing to be part of this vision.

Hi Sam,
Thank you for the warm welcome. I have been navigating around the site to familiarise myself with the site. I shall certainly use the space to give more details about HESA projects.

A Nottingham-based company specialising in video conferencing services has offered to donate video conferencing hardware to HESA provided HESA is able to establish a receiving office abroad and meet the costs of maintaining the line.
HESA wishes to pilot the video link education project by connecting our office in Nottingham to a school in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Our preliminary findings suggest that broadband connectivity is still erratic in South Africa. Satellite delivery is more reliable. Our South Africa contact has confirmed that for £83 a month we can maintain a satellite video connection for 15 hours a month. I am looking for sponsors to helps establish the connection.
My hope is that we should be able to do a test connection by July. Please help me to make this a reality.

hi people? how are you all doing? i hope you are doing well. my names are Matthew Erot Echom, young male Christian, chair of youth group in northern Kenyan arid county called Turkana.
i am here to exchange ideas, learn more and also to see if i can find some donors to help us as a group change our home area.
NTYEI-Nyelilingi Turkana youth Empowerment Initiative, is a group of local youth who after discussing and deliberating on issues affecting many youth in larger Turkana, decided to come together and find a possible solution that can salvage the situation, reduce and if possible eradicate the problem.
Turkana as a county is semi-arid and the majority of the population are illiterate. Many and mostly youth have close to none way of eking a living and nothing as productive engaging activity, this has given them a lot of time to indulge in many boisterous and dangerous involvements including abusing drugs, early age sex, crime and even prostitution. All is because the place is hot and withered with no available economic supporting pillar to sustain their existence and carter for their day to day needs.
i need you to help me find some donors who might be willing to get my fellow youth out of boisterous behaviors that they indulge in.
looking forward to having you all as friends-good friends

We are struggling to ensure development of modern information environment that highly integrated with ICT application in Tanzania. This is because, Information sector particularly Libraries has been given low priorities to most of institutions in developing countries despite of its necessity in daily human life.
Firstly I would like to be linked to possible sources where they can support this efforts through. Secondly, I prefer to have a Tanzania Discussion Forum at least we can share different ideas on our efforts on attaining Millennium Development Goals.

Hi Adam. We are involved with projects in developing countries in two ways - one through our own partnered projects wherein we work on the ground through partner organisations and the other through the projects posted on our website that we promote through this online forum and will soon be promoting through our bi annual magazine called ENGAGE, that is widely read in the education and development circles in the UK and abroad.
At present, our capacity for direct involvement with field projects is limited but we have already implemented our first project in Nepal (as you might have noticed from the website) and our next project will be implemented in Africa in 2011. Watch out this space for the details. However, we encourage you to visit the projects page of our website and browse through the list. A number of them are in Africa and you might find an initiative there. The contact details of organisations are included in the briefs posted on the page so you may want to directly get in touch with them.

We just adopted about 11 slums (blighted communities) close to our operational base in Lagos, Nigeria. Part of our plan is to set up a school in each community for children that are out of school.
We hope to do this so as to also assist in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal.

We are inspired by your great works in Nepal! We are currently working on an expansion project at our school to increase children's capacity. a project proposal is already done and awaits posting to prospective funders the Australian embassy, in Zimbabwe
A new project possibly next year would be to establish a computer lab in order to introduce ICT lessons to the children. This may require some help from well wishers too through SSF

Hello Steve,
The plight of children is a major concern for all of us given the role they will in turn play as tomorrow's adults. It is very sad to see that over 60-million children are unable to attain first school level of education in the 21st century. My organisation; Centre for Reconstruction and Development based in Cameroon currently works in a community where over 60% of the inhabitants cannot read or write. This makes my work difficult, since they do not understand us well as a result of poor communication. Classrooms are inexistent in some schools let alone benches on which to write. Most pupils complete attending school without having owned a textbook in their life. Education should not be perceived by children of the poor to be luxury, but seen as a tool for the advancement of human development. I see it as a moral obligation for us to concertedly work together in this social network and change the world to be a better place for the underprivileged.

Our team, with help of local volunteers, working day and night to provoke parents as well children to help themselves by supporting RUBRO to get what they deserve. rubro192@hotmail.com

Hello all,
My name is Dominique Vidale-Plaza, I work for a grassroots organization based in the US - Women in War Zones. I am currently in Bukavu, DR-Congo working on the Women in War Zones initiative: the Wamu Project. The Project is named after Helene Wamuzila, a woman who was brutally raped by militia, featured in our documentary, filmed at Panzi Hospital. Helene craved an education and was a truly motivated woman, capable of great things, despite her illiteracy. Helene passed away shortly after the release of the documentary and so we named the Project after this woman who truly believed in the power of an education, even though she never had the opportunity to receive one.
The Wamu Project is geared toward ensuring the education and literacy of survivors of sexual violence and the conflict in the DRC. We believe that education is important in the psycho-social recovery and re-integration into society of the women we serve and that education empowers. Empowered women is key to the overall rehabilitation of this country, and bringing peace and conflict resolution to a country much in need of it.
I hope to learn more about your ongoing projects and perhaps partner with other related groups. Any questions? Contact me at dominique@womeninwarzones.org

Social context
Senegal is the only african country perhaps in the world where are two different types of street children :
-street children
-talibés
These 2terms are often confused. it is important to underline that street children come from poor relations, divorced parents and are often orphans They live and sleep on the street trying to survive on their own. They live in the same type of circumstances as these in other countries. They are estimated at more 12,000 in Dakar.
On the contrary, the Talibés are children aged between 5 to 19 years old who are sent by their parents to the Marabouts in order to teach them coranic education .Traditonally, families contacted with the Marabouts to raise their children and provide them with coranic education. Talibés as well street children are readily recognizable throughout Dakar for the rags that they wear and the tomato paste cans that hang around their neeks .Marabouts are muslim leaders very respected by population and local authorities .A Marabout may have between 15 and several thousands of Talibés, on his care depending of his reputation Their mission is to teach the Talibés coranic education .This education is accompanied by by practical initiations into the community life,to acquire the sense of humility and endurance in all kind of trials.
Talibés live often in appealing conditions where hunger, thirst and deases are rampant .Begging is part of the coranic education. During the day time, Marabouts send their Talibés out into street to beg. They enquire a certain quota equivalent to one dollar a day,if the Talibé do not meet the quota ,they are severely beaten by their Marabouts. The Talibés are estimated at more than 150,000 in Senegal.
Even, though they receive some education from their religious teachers, this education is so limited that it cannot afford them decent employment. The consequence is that the Talibé in future becomes either the Marabout’s disciple or unemployed. Both Talibés and street children need education and training to be able to integrate themselves into the community as productive members. If nothing is done now from five to ten years, some of them will face the danger of dying of hunger and desease while others will become drug addids and juvenile delinquants

Greetings from Manyoni - Tanzania.
I am Heri Labani Sagali, working with Manyoni District Council as Community Development Officer. Our Organization mission is to bring sustainable development through the provision of quality social and economic services based on stakeholder participation and good governance in elimination of poverty.
I am writing on behalf of my District Council to ask for support on construction of District resource centre with ICT. We have received few book from our friend, and decided to give to two secondary school here in town. But we are planning to recieve many books from one of our friends abroad, and the room we have is not enough.
We have planned to find funds for construction of District Resource Centre with ICT so that every one, the whole community could access the books and use it.
Nowadays we have many people who are studying at the same time working but they face an area where they could get books for references. Our district does not have a resource centre. So constructing a new resource centre will be good solution for the people and community here in Manyoni district about education.
Am looking forward to here from you anyone who are interesting with my idea are freely to contact me through my contacts below.

Hello everybody.
I'm Petra Barghouthi, live in the West Bank of Palestinian Terotories. I'm new particepant and try to familiarize myself with the website which I found it very interesting and the projects listed are very inspiring. I'm working on developing a psychotherapy and rehabilitation center for children and young people in Palestine who are suffering from differnt pycho-social difficulties resulted by the political conflict and social manars. the project is to use art modles in therapy, I am myself finished my master degree from The central School of Speech and Drama in UK. coming back to my country put on me a great responsabilty to offer this service which is totaly unique here. I worked with children in a Palestinian refugee camps with groups of children, young people and women, the results were fascinating and promising. I also developed an inclusive art education project in the governmental schools where I focus on the disadvantaged areas for 5 years. after this experience I am now looking forward and working on founding a training and rehabilitation center where I can further develop this service and train counselors and teachers in schools and community centers to work with children. so i found this website hoping to find any support or help that could transform thousands of children's life into a better psychological and educational conditions. Hope to hear from you.

The shortage of qualified teachers in rural and poor facilitated schools is one of the most challenging problems faced by overburdened education systems in Uganda. It's not unusual for a government village school, housing 200-500 students, to have fewer than half a dozen teachers who are not well-qualified to teach many of the subjects that they are required to teach. It is also not unusual for even these few teachers to be absent due to various reasons on any given day. There a need to transform these challenges

We educate and much more. Our programme is a holistic approach to the family and it's problems. We educate, provide psychosociological support with personalised programmes. Our target beneficiaries are female heads of household with at least two children and little or no support. We will help them recover and rebuild their families, keeping their children away from drugs, alcoholism, gangsterism and worse. We will also help them find jobs with national level employers or, better still, help them start and establish their own businesses and so create a beneficial ripple effect in their local community.

Welcome to the online community David and great to know about your work on inclusive education. We currently have two organisations working in Zambia, listed on our website - Cecily's Fund and Maboshe Memorial. Cecily's fund works particularly with Children orphaned by AIDS and Maboshe Memorial works with disabled children including children with HIV/AIDS. You can find details about the two organisations in the PROJECTS section of the website which also lists 155 other projects in several countries in Africa and Asia. You will surely come across several other organisations, besides these two in Zambia, working on inclusive education and there may be opportunities for collaborative work or exchange of ideas. .
My fascination with Sciences of humanity was established during my time at college where I studied Health Studies. I have always had an enthusiastic interest in science based subjects, specifically, psychiatry, psychology. Studying the subject as part of my Health Studies course has made me comprehend that the life of Science is what I want to be a part of.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in the interactions of human beings and on a larger scale how human behavior affects society. I have a particular interest in social care which is an area I believe, cannot be embarked upon lightly.
I am interested in serving as child advocate campaigner and lead a team that will make my hands dirty when it comes to turf time and performance conditions for the organization having grown up as an orphan child and tested the pain of being an orphan child in Africa.
As 2011 comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the past year and the many headline stories of financial uncertainty, political uprisings, and natural disasters. Everywhere are signs of growing recognition that the status quo is no longer an option. The world needs to experiment with new ways of renewing and revitalizing both our systems of capitalism and of government. CAHED is one such experiment and we need your support to create even greater impact in our next phase for future generation.
I often repeat our major accomplishments: over 5000 Children served with basics like safe drinking water, Food nutrition’s i.e. agricultural inputs, and healthcare and access to education; and over 500 jobs created among young persons in our informal settlement community of Homa-Bay through entrepreneurial skills. But at the end of the day, capital investing is a human story. It is about investing in one another for the long-term, attaching real stakes ,which traditional charity often fails to do and real engagement in poor communities to the goal of long-term social impact, not short-term financial gain. This is what sets CAHED apart – not just what we do, but how we do it.
When you support our work, you support our tomorrow leaders, and ideas that can change the world. You support efforts to build sustainable programs that enable small children who live in the slum of Shauri Yako in Homa-Bay,County, Kenya, to be our African pride.
To grow to this next level,we need your support. Please join us for the journey and commit to giving a gift in our speak to the children program to help us build a world beyond poverty – one that extends the fundamental assumption that man is created equal to every man, woman, and child on the earth.
Background Information
Community Action For Health and Development was founded in the year 2004 as a Community Based Organization by a group of minded young persons in the development mainstream as a means of doing service above self in championing for the rights of underprivileged, children, young persons, and the poor in our community for empowerment and equity.
The organization address the plight of orphans and the vulnerable children who are left to yonder after the death of their parents, focusing on issues that affect the growth and development in our community in Homa-Bay County within the municipality.
Community Action For Health and Development is a child focused organization and are keen in implementing activities which supports orphans and widows (James 1:27); to defend the cause of the weak and the fatherless, maintain the rights of the poor and the oppressed (Psalms 82: 3-4). OVC are among those severely affected and most neglected in AIDS programming and investing in them is investing in the future, strength and security of communities. Care of OVC is therefore a powerful common ground for initiating AIDS responses in communities to fulfill one of the cornerstones of millennium development Goals.
CAHED believes, orphaned children develop best when they are able to remain with their siblings within a family situation with an adult caregiver in their own community. The comfort of siblings, relatives and familiar authority figures and surroundings helps to mitigate the grief, insecurity and fears experienced by children who lose a parent. Orphans are also able to participate in their own traditions and cultures. In turn, they are more likely to succeed in school, socialization skills and preparation for their future livelihood. HIV/AIDS prevention and advocacy for protection against OVC abuse and exploitation interventions is key to make sure OVC and other children in the communities are taken care and supported.
It is against this background that, CAHED intervention initiatives focused to address the problem of the impact of HIV/AIDS in Homa-Bay Shauri -Yako slums and in particular the plight of the vulnerable and orphaned children. The programs want to put in place short-term and long-term measures aimed at improving quality of life of OVC and the community psychosocial support systems. The long-term interventions will include Income Generating Activities (e.g. education sponsorship and development, enterprise development, psychosocial support centre, to help OVC and community members to be self-sustaining.
About Shauri --Yako
Shauri Yako peri-urban (informal) settlement is the most conspicuous informal settlement within Homa Bay Municipality. Shauri Yako is a Kiswahili word which literally means, “at your own risk”. It has a history of “Sodom & Gomorah” where prostitution and drunkenness was the order of the day. Although this has changed to an extent, the place is still insecure and promiscuous. The growth of the slum has been both rapid and unplanned resulting in desperate living standards for majority of inhabitants. It’s among the worst polluted and disease ridden habitats in Homa Bay. Section which happens to be served by sewerage line, suffers from permanent sewage discharge polluting surface waters and seepage from sewers, septic tanks and pit toilets pollute few shallow wells in existence and lake water as well. Due to poor sanitation facilities and lack of drainage, human faeces and pools of stagnant water are found adjacent to family households. Such living conditions are particularly serious for young children resulting in high incidences of diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, malaria, fungal infections, scabies, ring-worms and chest infections. Poor knowledge of good hygiene practices accentuates the problem resulting in high incidences of infant mortality and morbidity.

We aim to foster exchange of knowledge and expertise on these forums and bring together people and organisations who are doing similar work. We would like to reiterate that we are not a 'grant-making' Foundation and we do not have any process in place for acceptance of fund seeking proposals. However, we do look forward to knowing more about your work on education and profiling it through our website.

We will appreciate any assistance from any well-wisher.We have developed a proposal which we shall post to you for reference.

This has transcended into accepting mediocre leader, increased poverty and squalid living environment. This again has since rise in poor governance, bad leadership. The more educated folk African have the more demand for nothing less than a quality and improved living standards and the more emancipation and freedoms for its population.

Kind Regards
Dr. Joseph Zulu.

Please help me to make this a reality.

i am here to exchange ideas, learn more and also to see if i can find some donors to help us as a group change our home area.

At present, our capacity for direct involvement with field projects is limited but we have already implemented our first project in Nepal (as you might have noticed from the website) and our next project will be implemented in Africa in 2011.
Thank you.

Our team, with help of local volunteers, working day and night to provoke parents as well children to help themselves by supporting RUBRO to get what they deserve. rubro192@hotmail.com

Project: street children’s education and training
This project aims to enroll 20children aged from 6 to 13 years old in education and 40 children aged from 15 to 19 years old in training such as electronic, computer and sewing. At the sending of this training ,these children will be placed as intership for 6 months in various workshops in Dakar, before lauching their own initiatives.
Needed funds for training

It will also be helpful if you can post a brief write-up about your organisation and projects on the website and share your contact details so that others could get in touch with you as well. Thanks.

To grow to this next level, we need your support.
