Background & History
Total Health Ghana is a foundation which was founded in the year 2008 and registered to operate fully in 2010. Its office is located in Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana. The formation was a result of increasing effect of illiteracy associated with bad health practices within its catchment areas. It was realized that lack of educational facilities in such rural communities contributed immensely to the growing number of illiterate young people and the after effect being practicing of social vices The number of young people between the ages 18 and 25 yrs who could not access primary education is about 6850 out of 15420 according to the 2010 Population Census conducted by the Government of Ghana. The crime rate with the perpetrators being illiterate young people according to the Ghana Police service stands at 12.8% as against the National crime rate. That means that these problems can a matter of time become uncontrollable if measures are not adopted to reduce the rate. Therefore THG plans to start with little children whose parent cannot afford primary education by appealing to our conscience to come to their aid and save their future because WE ALL COUNT.
Objectives
The objectives of the project are listed below:
- To create a responsible future and healthy adulthood for under privileged children
- To help develop positive mentality and attitude in these poor children in order to embrace life fully prepared.
- To create an enabling platform for these little ones at least obtain a fitting primary education as enshrined in the Millennium Development Goals objective 2
- To bring out and make good use the talents and abilities of these children for the benefit of the society and the world at large.
- To provide a future that ensures greater achievement than only primary education can offer.
Implementation Plan
The organization has adopted a strategic system that is realistic as possible. One hundred (100) poor (extremely poor including orphans) children have been selected carefully judging from precise interview and investigation and adopted as project children. They are between the ages of 6 and 10 years and THG is fully convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that they are very poor and cannot afford primary education; they even cannot afford a single less quality meal a day. Their future has been shadowed by the circumstances they find themselves. They only go to the farm in the morning or work in other people’s farm for a day’s livelihood. These children have been selected and given project numbers (i.e. THG-SC-001 up to THG-SC-100)
The sponsorship package ranges from the sponsor donating to the child an amount ranging from $20.00 every month. This fund will be used as follows:
Education: 70%
Food & Others: 30%
Upon receipt of the fund, the parent will be given consented and made aware of how much fund was received and that it is specifically for educational purposes. THG is humbly appealing to your conscience that there is a dieing need for your support and your $20.00 a month can secure the responsible future of a child, your sponsored child will communicate with you through THG’s adopted system of Sponsor Child Correspondence (SCC). SCC will ensure that letters are written to sponsors and sponsor letters are read, explained and delivered to the children as soon as possible THG’s will also organize Saturday extra curricular classes for all project children and takes them through the UNFPA’s Life Planning Skills manual to imbibe in them self esteem and good personal values.
It is expected that every sponsor will at least stay on the project for 15 years.
Activity Management – Monitoring & Evaluation
Indicators have been adopted to measure the impact or success of this activity. These include:
- The child’s performance at school will be monitored and where extra tuition is needed then considered
- The child’s social life development
- The moral life of the child will be monitored and evaluated
- The child’s commitment to project extra curricular classes
- The child’s responses to sponsor letters.
The following is the complete management picture of the project
- Administration
The administration structure of THG is made up of five board members including the programs director. The board ensures the adaptation of feasible and realistic strategies, monitor progress of projects and make recommendations where necessary. The daily administration of the project will be coordinated by the Programs Director, Project Co-ordinatory and the Social Worker. The Projects Coordinator will monitor the daily activities of the project and report to the Programs Director. The programs director prepares monthly report for evaluation by the board. The project social worker goes to the marked to buy items needed by the project children. This is done on a scrutinized system of accountability.
- Financial Management
The Programs Director should be notified of all funds transferred into its accounts for the month for the preceding month’s activities. An email of funds deposited containing child’s name and number from the sponsor should be received and the total amount recorded. Since diverse needs are to be met of the children they will be assessed collectively by the three staff and totaled to the amount received for the month. THG hopes not to leave any project funds in its accounts for whatever reason but release all funds for the education needs of its project children.
Payment vouchers will be raised and kept at the office and any sponsor who happens to come to Ghana and decide to pass through our offices will have complete access to all financial records with regards to their project. Monthly financial receipt and expenditure reports will be prepared and filed for record purposes.
- Reporting
Monthly general reports (Child’s progress in school, administration, fiancé etc) will be sent via email to all sponsors and sponsors are expected to make input and suggest ways to make the project very successful.
Future Feasibility
THG hopes to reach out to as many deprived children as possible and intends to add another 100 children when the first 100 are exhausted and implemented for about a year. All selected beneficiaries have promised to stay on the project for at 10 years and sponsors should be willing to be on the project for least 10 years.
Conclusion
It is your turn to touch the heart and transform the whole life of a child and secure the future, don’t hesitate, seize the opportunity to do so because we all count. Change a child’s future for the better today for you might be saving yours as well.
