"There are many moments in our lives where we reflect on an issue and say to ourselves, ‘I ought to do something about this’. These moments invariably pass by, and we have done nothing. But there will be one moment, one day, when you become aware of an issue that commands your immediate action. You get up and do something about it. And soon enough, you are swept up in the momentum of your action in the accompaniment of others who share the same passion, the same commitment. And you don’t look over your shoulder once; such is your experience on this new journey of discovery."
Michael Sayo, Founder MANDO
This is exactly how Matonyok Nomads Development Organization - MANDO came into being as an initiative of native born-children from the Kajiado area. Upon realization of challenges their community always seemed to face, this group undertook numerous sensitizations by the central government and set up an organization whose background would be to collectively address community challenges for a better life.
Our vision is to realize improved living standards of Maasai pastoralist’s communities that are literate, with secured livelihoods and reduced vulnerability to poverty. We aim to do this by initiating partnerships around the world where supporters to our vision have an opportunity to both reflect and to demonstrate their solidarity for those unsure of when their next meal will be or how they will feed their child.
MANDO supports children in the Maasai land schools not only with the water projects, but is also identifying other needs such as replacing the toilet for the pupils, improving incomplete classroom structures and furnishing school libraries. MANDO also intends to send international volunteer teachers to train children and parents in needed skills. Much needs to be done to improve the life experienced by these youngsters. MANDO has identified the need to distribute mosquito nets to families for combating malaria, distributing clothing, toys, beddings, food, and shoes to improve not only the living standards but standards of their shelters as well.
Most of the children in these areas were orphaned vulnerable children (OVC’s) and 56% were vulnerable in other ways. (World Vision Report 2007). These numbers tell us that all children in this area are vulnerable and need support in all fronts.
Feel free to join our efforts today in improving the lives of the Maasai children in Kenya and beyond.

Our 2011 Campaign
In response to the problems facing the school going youth especially girls in Kajiado District in southern Rift Valley, Matonyok Nomads Development Organization , a non governmental organization working in the region is proposing for the construction of a girls boarding school at the cost of US$190,000
MANDO with its partnered community are seeking to the establishment of a secondary boarding school for orphans and those whose parents are adverse affected to re-current droughts leading to migrations throughout the years.
The school will bear the name MANDO SPRINGS OF HOPE SCHOOL incorporating the name of the local organizations – MANDO in Kenya whose mission is to enable the Maasai pastoralist’s communities to eradicate illiteracy and poverty by overcoming the injustice and inequity that causes them for improved livelihoods
The principle aim of MANDO SPRINGS OF HOPE SCHOOL shall be to promote education for disadvantaged children throughout Maasai districts in Kenya. MANDO shall achieve this through the establishment of a secondary boarding school for orphans and those whose parents cannot afford school fees. The goals of the school are:
- To provide a high quality education, focusing on child-centered teaching methods
- To run the school on a not-for-profit basis for the purpose of educating those disadvantaged children who could not otherwise attend school
- To charge no fees, except where a parent/guardian can contribute a small amount
- To look after all children in the school’s care and to provide them with adequate nutrition, living space and medical facilities
- To produce well-rounded individuals who have had a chance to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities
- To treat all students and staff with respect and dignity
Following the successful establishment of this school, MANDO may pursue other education initiatives to further its principle aim.
