| Library for Development - an appeal from ALISOD, March 2011 One among issues addressed as the root-courses of the drop-out of the students performance at the last year's Form Four National Examination has been identified as the unavailability to library services to most of schools. In addition; lack of libraries, poor library services for available libraries, lack of reading culture to most of students and community in general, as well the abandon of library industry resulted from dislike/underemphasis of libraries to most of policy makers are identified. This denotes the need of cooperative efforts of individuals, private sectors and the government towards solving the issue. Through Library and ICT Development Project (LIDEP), on May 25th, 2011, African Library Solution and Development (ALISOD) will launch grant for Secondary Schools in Tanzania as a special steps intending at solving the issue in cooperation with International Organizations. The Project will intend at donating books to libraries, giving special consideration to the efforts done by these schools in ensuring better library services. We expect more than 138 schools to benefit directly from this first stage of implementation of the Project. This means that we expect more than 148,000 students to benefit directly. ALISOD continues to emphasis donors to visit our Support Us page for any donations and grants for this Project since modern information environment that intergrated with ICT for better services in all School Libraries is our frontier priority. School Libraries are encouraged to visit ALISOD website from time to time for more updates or you may Contact us at African Library Solution and Development (ALISOD) P.O. ALISOD seek donations of Books, Computers, Money, links to electronic resources or any support for Library and ICT development in Tanzania where we operate. This is because, Information is the tool for any development activity. Nothing can be done without relevant information. Despite of this necessity, most of people in Tanzania has no or little knowledge on modern information environment. Also, the modern information infrastructure are limited to specific areas such as towns or limited to specific organizations such as few government Institutions those meant for specific users.
While modern information environment needs computer literacy, high costs associated on establishing infrastructures necessary for computer trainings found difficulties to government to carter actual demand for this. At the same time, most of private Institutions engaged on computer trainings focus on profit making rather than literacy creation. Hence, people found difficult to reach these few established training infrastructures due to incapability to pay resulted from poverty. Hence, few access out of millions.
The results, information has not fully utilized or mis-handled. Though there is little alteration to reach a peak of modern information environment which is strongly needed in Tanzania due to increased demand in this modern world, so as to utilize fully this modern information environment, skills on information search and retrieval is crucial. Tanzanians need knowledge on different information sources, different storage medias, different information format as well as different modes of information dissemination. This denotes the serious need of information literacy skills to the community.
Secondly, Library establishment or strengthening of its services is ignored or given very low priority to most of Institutions in Tanzania. As well, library use is very low to the community (Tanzania Library Service Board approximated as 150,000 users per year). Most of the people come to use libraries at university or at work or not at all.
Thus, sensitization on library establishment, strengthening of available libraries and motivation on library use is necessary.
African Library Solution and Development (ALISOD) is the only non-profit organization registered in Tanzania with the focus on Library and ICT development in the country. It has been founded with the vision of supporting community development and bridge modern information environment that highly integrated with ICT to create knowledge for all. (http://alisod.org/index.php?page=how-cmsms-works)
For this purpose, ALISOD provides free library services (that supported by books donations from USA, UK and local sources), free Internet access, free information literacy skills, free consultation on library matters, free computer trainings and many other services so that to ensure the development of the sectors. All these services are open to any public members. See Services
ALISOD is seeking donations of Books, Computers or Cash so that it can help us on our efforts on develop Library and ICT industry in Tanzania through ALISOD Library Development Project (ALDP) in the following ways;
1. Library development initiatives by sensitization of Library establishment and improvement of Library services as well as Library use.
2. Training on modern Information environment that will involve strengthening our computer laboratories for Computer Training to impart community with knowledge on modern information environment that needs computer literacy. Also, these computers will assist ALISOD on strengthening its Information Literacy Skills Training since the community needs to be trained on how to retrieve, organize as well utilize information from variety of sources on different formats. People has little knowledge on accessing different information available on different media, on different formats such as printed or non-printed.
Your donation/support to ALISOD will mean a lot to millions of Tanzanians who are in a serious needs but lacks facilities to match with the modern information environment. ALISOD is committed to serve the community so as to attain its objectives that aim at development of Library and ICT in Tanzania as well as attaining Millennium Development Goals.

Dear all,
Greetings from Manyoni - Tanzania.
I am Heri Labani Sagali, working with Manyoni District Council as Community Development Officer. Our Organization mission is to bring sustainable development through the provision of quality social and economic services based on stakeholder participation and good governance in elimination of poverty.
I am writing on behalf of my District Council to ask for support on construction of District resource centre with ICT. We have received few book from our friend, and decided to give to two secondary school here in town. But we are planning to recieve many books from one of our friends abroad, and the room we have is not enough.
We have planned to find funds for construction of District Resource Centre with ICT so that every one, the whole community could access the books and use it.
Nowadays we have many people who are studying at the same time working but they face an area where they could get books for references. Our district does not have a resource centre. So constructing a new resource centre will be good solution for the people and community here in Manyoni district about education.
Am looking forward to here from you anyone who are interesting with my idea are freely to contact me through my contacts below.
Thanks,
Heri Labani Sagali

Our on-going program focuses more on promoting good governance practices (transparency, accountability and participation) for effective delivery of social services in rural communities. Also we are planning to have extension of the program throigh addressing issues related to primary and secondary education governance. We are quite aware that there still some education infrastructural challenges, but are not severe as compared to current situation of governance challenges. What I am requesting you is to give me some insights on how I can design a `program which is going to address effectively identified challenges in relation to education governance. My idea is to use school development plans which will be used by stakeholders platiform as a tool to assess progresses made.

I am Abu Sayed from Bangladesh. Currently I am studying the Joint European Master in Comparative Local Development organized by the University of Trento, Italy. I had to leave my village since I was 11 years old. My father sent me to Khulna city for education because in my village there was no good school. Moreover, he thought if I stay in my village then I might not continue or complete my education because of surroundings environment or lack of good school/ good teacher. However, I completed my bachelor degree in Urban and Rural Planning from Khulna University, Bangladesh. Since 2006, I have been working as a Town Planner in a Local Government Organization in my Country.
Once, when I was University student, one of my villagers asked me what will be their benefit if I am a educated person or if I have lot of money? This villager is not educated and poor. Nevertheless, he made me to think for the villagers. Since then I have been thinking to do something better for the villagers.
Since 2008, I have been thinking if I really want to do something better for my villagers then first I need to change their way of thinking by educating them. Therefore, I want to develop some mentality those can think for the betterment of the other people. However, I have developed a proposal to establish a library in my village. But I don't know what to do with this proposal. One of the villagers is interested to donate land for the library. To establish a room (15*24 sq ft) with decoration and books (all books from level 1 to level 12) I need at least 4000 euro. I am collecting money from my friends and they are really appreciating the initiative. Until now, my collection for the library from my friends is 336 euro. I would like to be happy if someone interested to read my proposal for the library. I will be glad to know your comment for the improvement of the proposal.
The " Library for Development" project has developed my concept to establish a library in my village.
Thank you very much for sharing your idea.
Kind Regards,
Abu Sayed
