Kithangari Upper Academy was started in a rural area of Kenya by retired teaching couple, Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Kithinji to provide education to the orphans and destitute children in the area. The founders are passionate believers in the Millennium Development Goal 2, the goal for education to ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.
The Kithinjis' model was 100% scholarship. However, once they ran out of their retirement funds, the model was no longer practical. Right now, the school acommodates 50% paying and 50% scholarship. However, the Kenyan syllabus changes yearly. Hence one of the major costs is books, which have a lifespan of one year. To address this, the school is seeking a donation of 100 Kindle readers. They can be used but in good working condition.
The school is need of basic infrastructure, (the buildings are semi permanent), but has running water and electricity. But the most recurrent problem is that of text books. Hence we are prioritizing the Kindles over the buildings.
Kindly assist these destitute kids get out of the cycle of poverty.
