1.0 Background

1.1 Statement of the Problem

From the research done by CHARITY BAG FOUNDATION-UGANDA (CBF-U) early in March 2010, Nakawa division experiences a very big number of orphans and disadvantaged children.

45% of the children between 3-13 years are disadvantaged. Some of these children have been neglected by their parents while others have parents who are disabled, chronically sick and extremely poor to the extent of not being in position to make their children access education.

31% of the children between the ages of 3-13 years are orphans who lost their parents as a result of accidents, murder, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Only 3% out of 31 live in a relatively comfortable and good life with their guardians.

This research was done in the 3 parishes of Luzira, Butabika and Banda.

It is upon this background that CBF-U was initiated to save this situation.

 

1.2 Problem solution

CBF-U with the help of the local council I leaders selected a total of 50 disadvantaged children (orphans) 4 villages i.e zone D (Butabika parish), Kasumba zone (Luzira parish), Mawejje zone (Butabika parish) and Kisenyi III zone (Luzira parish) in Nakawa division in Kampala district and recruited them into Charity bag foundation child sponsorship program so that CBF solicit financial and material support towards the education and well being of these children from individuals, associations, institutions and  companies.

1.3 Project description

1.3.1 Project name

The project name shall be CBF CHILD SPONSORSHIP PROJECT-LUZIRA CHAPTER.

1.3.2 Project goal

The project goal is: “To shape a bright future to the disadvantaged children of Luzira and Butabika parishes though education and talent development so that they become self reliant”.

1.3.3 Project specific objectives

To meet the school requirements of the selected disadvantaged children for a good academic progress.

To help these children discover and appreciate their talents through relevant programmes and activities.

To shape the morals of the selected children under the project through sensistisation, counseling and guidance.

To provide other essential materials for the well being of the selected children in the project for example clothes among others.

 

 1.3.4 Project Activities

School fees payment.

School fees shall be paid in time to the schools where the project children study to enable them study comfortably.

 

Provision of scholastic material.

These will also help to facilitate education of the project children. These materials involve pens, pencils, mathematical sets and bags.

 

School visits.

School visits shall be done by the social workers in the department of education to monitor the academic progress of the project children.

 

Home visits.

Home visits shall be done by social workers of the organization frequently to keep a good relationship between the organization and the guardians and to monitor the well being of the project child at home.

 

Talent discovery and development will be done through training in sports, music dance, drama and various competitions.

 

Sensitization on matters such as HIV/AIDS so that the project children do not fall victim.

 

Guidance and counseling. This will enable the project children feel loved and have good morals

1.3.5 Coverage and target population

This project covers only 4 villages in Nakawa division i.e. Kisenyi III in Luzira parish, Kasumba zone in Luzira parish, Mawejje zone in Luzira parish and zone D in Butabika parish.

The project targets disadvantaged children between the ages of 3-13 years.

 

1.3.6 Project Partnership

CBF-U seeks partners to facilitate the education of these 50 selected disadvantaged orphans in Nakawa division from next academic term which begins from 31st January 2011.

2 .0 Monitoring and Evaluation.

CBF-U has an education department comprising of social workers headed by a program officer in charge of education.

This department/office is responsible for frequently visiting the schools where the project children are to monitor their academic progress and well being. This department also makes frequent home visits to monitor the well being of project children at home so that there is a good relationship between the organization and the guardians.

The education department will give progress reports every month and provide accountability for all the financial input offered.

In case of gaps in academic progress, the education department and the organization at large shall make due adjustments in consultations with donor partners.

Good academic progress shall be judged basing on the child’s marks, position and remarks from the teachers.

4.0 Charity Bag Foundation-Uganda and its organizational capacity.

 

4.1 History and organizational background

CBF-U is a fully registered Non Governmental Organization with a registration number 5914/8646. The organization was initiated by Byarugaba Charity and Kigula Joseph early 2010 with the vision of realizing full potential and capability of vulnerable children and youth in Uganda.

CBF-U was established to achieve four objectives in Uganda i.e to facilitate the education of vulnerable and disadvantaged children and youth, to promote and safeguard the rights of children and youth, to provide sensitization on HIV/AIDS and offer support to HIV/AIDS young victims, to carry out research on issues concerning vulnerable children in Uganda.

The core values of CBF-U are: Honesty, Transparency, Accountability and Quality.

 

 

4.2 Organizational structure

CBF-U has a General assembly comprising of 40 representatives which sits once in every year to inform the public and all CBF members the progress of the organization and also get their views.

The organization has a Board of directors which is the guardian to the organization

 comprising of eight members. There is a managing director who direct activities of CBF-U towards the attainment of the objectives and serve as the chief relations officer.

Below the Managing director is the Coordinator who makes sure that are the organizational activities are done well in all the three departments of education, HIV/AIDS and research.

The organization has an accountant who serves as a financial administrator concerned with all financial matters of CBF.

CBF has a qualified and competent legal officer who handles all legal matters on behalf of the organization.

There is a program officer in charge of education who handles projects and activities concerning education, a program officer in charge of HIV/AIDS who handles all projects and activities concerning HIV/AIDS and the program officer in charge of research who handles all research projects and activities.

CBF-U has social workers with minimum qualification of diploma in a field related to community work from a recognized institution who implement all the projects under the department of education and HIV/AIDS under the guidance their respective program officers.

Research assistants are in place and these are responsible for collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data to the program officer in charge of research.

 

4.3 Other projects the CBF has undertaken

CBF-U is also undertaking an HIV/AIDS sensitization drive in primary and secondary schools in Nakawa division to equip children and youth with information about HIV/AIDS. This information includes how HIV can be acquired, usefulness of HIV/AIDS testing, how it can be prevented and positive living with HIV/AIDS.

 

4.4 Partnership and networking

CBF partners with other well established organizations such as Nagguru Health Information and Health Center which supplies CBF-U with information, education and communication material (IEC material), Straight talk, Young talk, Hallea Youth Support Center and Chain Foundation-Uganda.

CBF is also ready to work with companies which can support charity work in line with its objectives.
