Bishop Okoth Girls'- Mbaga Secondary School

Bishop Okoth Girls'- Mbaga Secondary School was established in 1977 by the Catholic Church Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph- Asumbi, in Kenya. The school is a girls' boarding facility with 688 students. The school is located 4.5 Kilometers from Siaya town, Siaya County in Kenya.

The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph established the school to mitigate the impact of illiteracy in the Siaya County and in Nyanza Province. The school is a public one and a Provincial graded one by the Government of Kenya. 30% of its teaching staff are government teachers while 70% are paid by the Board of Governors. Apart from the inadequate classrooms and other infrastructural facilities, the Support Staff are over 30.

The Principal- Reverend Sister Sarah Adipo, has always been optimistic and strategic at offering the best to the girl students irrespective of their ability to pay school fees. Thus majority of the girls that have excelled and been admitted to University Colleges come from the same poor families.  73 students are orphaned and vulnerable girls who have with either or no parents and homes. They form one of the biggest challenges the school has.

Another critical area is the management of the medical health of the girls in the school. While we have a school nurse who dispenses basic drugs to the students after attending the District Hospital in Siaya, it is increasingly becoming necessary for the school to initiate a dispensary in the school to offer diagnosis, treatment and laboratory services even during night hours. The school intends to source for medical drugs and intern Volunteers from Health institutions that could provide free medical services to students in the school. The school however, has a lab technician who is employed in the school.

We aspire to provide, promote and coordinate quality education for the empowerment of girls to become caring, competent and responsible citizens who have respect for life and educational values.
