World Bank and Education - The World Bank is developing a new education strategy (2010-2020) that will shape its education policies for the next decade. The Bank is holding consultations in the process, the most recent of which took place in London on Tuesday 15 June.
Being there - Teacher absence or problems of motivation - Some children are not in school because their teachers are not there to teach them. A study in India in 2004 found that one in four government primary school teachers were not in school on a given day. But is this a problem properly identified as "teacher absenteeism" or should it better be addressed as a question of encouraging teacher motivation ?
MDG 2 - Is enrolment a sufficient criterion ? - The Millennium Development Goals Report 2009 shows that enrolment in primary schools has increased in all regions though it is lower in Sub Saharan Africa as compared to the other regions. It raise the question as to whether enrolment in schools is a sufficient criterion/indicator to assess progress towards the achievement of education for all, or should we be looking also at other models of educational provision through the use of ICT and distance learning facilities rather than attendance at school ?
